Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is a saying made by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states: "As a discussion on the Internet grows longer, the likelihood of a comparison of a person's being compared to Hitler or another Nazi reference, increases.". That means that as more people talk on the Internet for a longer time, it becomes more and more likely that someone will talk about Hitler or the Nazis. But ever since the beginning of the internet, people have been describing films, video games, people, and other stuff as "worse than Hitler". While being the very first internet meme to exist; this move is, however, very toxic.
Why It's Rotten
First of all, it is extremely illogical how it is practiced. Many people claim anything they hate that is worse than Hitler. This is most common in the Justin Bieber Hatedom, as most TheTopTens users make hateful lists out of him, and most of his haters call him "worse than Hitler". (How can a movie, show, video game, singer, etc. that you hate be worse than a psychopathic dictator and genocidal madman who killed millions of innocent people?!)
The comparisons for these are dumb and nonsensical, since how does a bad movie/show/video game even compare to a real-life politician?
Some of the haters even go as far as to call actual heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. "worse than Hitler" which is extremely offensive.
Some edgelords would even say to themselves "I'm worse than Hitler".
They make hate art of things/characters/people they hate as Hitler or a Nazi.
Not only do they compare things to Hitler, but there are also people who compare certain things to other evil people (Charles Manson, Kim Jong Un, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, etc).
Comparing something to Stalin or other Communists is called “Red Baiting”.
Even some religious hatedoms overlaps with this. They compare religions that they don't like with Nazis.
They also compare religions figures (such as Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad) with Hitler.
Some also compare fictional characters with Hitler.
