}}GameSpot is a video gaming website that provides news, reviews, previews, downloads, and other information on video games. The site was launched on May 1, 1996, created by Pete Deemer, Vince Broady and Jon Epstein.
In addition to the information produced by GameSpot staff, the site also allows users to write their own reviews, blogs, and post on the site's forums.
Why They Suck
# Biased reporting: Carolyn Petit, for example, lowered the score of Grand Theft Auto V for "sexism" and its political muddleness (she also gave 8/10 for The Last Of Us for, surprise, "sexism"). She is also a major contributor for Feminist Frequency as well.
#* Jordan Ramée gave Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales only a 7/10 for bland NPC models, inconsistent camera, bad pacing and feeling the same. He also complained about the leaps and back-flips that Miles Morales pulls off before he web swings, going as far as saying it's "full of exaggerated swagger of a black teen" which is unnecessary and offensive.
# They do not disclose Amazon affiliate links appearing on the game hub pages.
# They Fired Jeff Gerstmann for his mediocre score of 6.0 for Kane and Lynch due to the fact the site at the time was heavily advertising the game. This became one of the best known cases of corruption in game journalism.
# Multiple instances of lack of disclosure:
#* GameSpot writer Eddie Makuch wrote an article for Day For Nights's new game, The Black Glove, getting a PS4 version added to the supported platforms on launch. The founder of the game studio, Joe Fielder, is a former site director of GameSpot, leading to a potential conflict of interest, which was disclosed.
#* GameSpot posted its review for Call of Duty: Advance Warfare giving the game an 8/10. They did not disclose the review event they would have had to attend in order to get an accurate test of the Multiplayer aspects of the game. Also of note, the site was wrapped in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare game ads during the time of the review.
#* GameSpot Writer Chris Watters hosted the World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor reveal event. This event was also broadcast through GameSpot's website and video player, which carried the GameSpot logo. They also ran multiple ads for Warlords of Draenor during its release.
#* GameSpot reviewer Brittany Vincent gave Warlords of Draenor an 8 out of 10, with no disclosure for the reveal event, which was a conflict of interest for the entire site.
#* Former journalist Danny O'Dwyer made two videos about Zoë Quinn's game Depression Quest without disclosing the fact that he contributed to the game and is on friendly terms with Quinn.
# Has been caught using stolen footage. Ironically, they have had their own footage stolen by IGN once.
# Several journalists of the site have taken an anti-GamerGate stance.
# Censors any anti-SJW content in the forums, as well as any criticism about their lack of ethics.
#* The staff/admins also ban users from the site for seemingly no reason.
# Along with IGN, they threatened PlayAsia for supporting Dead or Alive Xtreme 3. As a result PlayAsia still sells D0AX3 and they were really annoyed with Social Justice Warriors in gaming journalism.
# They also attacked Kingdom Come: Deliverance, siding with Social Justice Warriors and claiming that inclusiveness is more important than historical accuracy.
# They also attacked Kingsman: The Golden Circle, just because they think a James Bond reference joke is "misogynistic."
# They also complained about Far Cry 5 being "confusing" because it didn't portray the "alt-right" as complete irredeemable monsters.
# They went FullMcIntosh with the video: "Video games don't need to be fun".
# They gave Dead Rising 3 a 3/10 over very petty issue
# They insulted gamers who were not happy with Doom (2016)<nowiki/>'s VR edition, calling them "entitled".
# They gave Alien: Resurrection a 4.7 out of Ten because it's too difficult. Despite it being better than the movie its based on. The reviewer also criticized the controls as "it's most terrifying element" even though it pioneered how FPS games are controlled in later generations.
# Moving corruption and SJW aspects aside, as seen in pointers 1 and 13, it's not rare for them to review games from biased and even somewhat subjective perspectives, and it has been like that from Gamespot's starting years. Like, aforementioned Jeff Gerstmann gave 5.4 score to Sega Saturn version of PowerSlave, also claiming that the game is unoriginal, but praised PlayStation 1 version of absolutely awful Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, claiming that it's "a pretty amazing meld of fighting and platform jumping and is sure to please fans of Mortal Kombat and platform games alike", and giving it a 7.5 score (except for the fact that both of those aspects were executed really terribly and thanks to these and other bad aspects, game pleased from little to no people.
# They also lowered the score of Persona 5 dancing all night due to its female characters being attractive.
# They also lowered the score for Weedcraft Inc due to its "lack of exploration to the impact of weed".
# They also censored any criticism towards their SJW practices.
# They also even enjoy mocking gamers and admitting to finding ethics in gaming disgusting.
# The forums, while not as bad as GameFAQs or IGN boards, the users are very elitist and often start flame wars.
# Their review for SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated. No other words.
# You cannot undo your upvote on a review, if was a accident or a test.
The Only Redeeming Quality
# They sometimes give games accurate scores they deserve. As an example, they rated The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time a 10/10.
